Fictional podcasts are among my favorite to listen to. Shows with the right blend of drama, intrigue, and excitement leave me hooked.

Some of my favorite fictional podcasts include Case 63, Sandra and my favorite of all time I recommend you go listen to now, Homecoming.

Creating a storytelling podcast takes a lot more time and commitment than a solo or interview podcast. But if you are a fiction writer or want to share a true story in an entertaining way then creating a storytelling podcast is a great way to do that.

You may already understand the significance of a fascinating story in shaping the identity and impact of your show. But here’s the question: while you may recognize the importance of a compelling narrative, are you familiar with the important elements of storytelling that can truly set your podcast apart? You will have your answer in this blog post.

I’m Niall Mackay, founder of Seven Million Bikes Podcasts. Being a Scotsman I’m a natural born storyteller! You are brought up listening to your relatives and friends telling stories around the dinner table and at family gatherings.

This upbringing led me to become a successful comedian and podcaster. Being able to share stories is crucial to what I do.

But crafting and telling a story that engages podcast listeners isn’t easy, it’s a combination of creativity, practice, and techniques that require dedication, thoughtful brainstorming, and the artistry of a skillful podcaster. In this guide, I will not only tell you about the components of a story but also the secret skill of delivering the story to your audience.

What Makes A Good Story

Here are some basic elements of good stories. Each story needs a unique twist that makes it stand out. Whether it’s a tale of adventure, romance, mystery, or any genre, these elements play a crucial role in shaping the narrative and capturing the audience’s attention.

Engaging Characters

Characters are an important story element of a powerful story. Actually, a story can have different types of characters such as a protagonist, antagonist, supporting characters, and so on.

A well-developed main character possesses depth, relatability, and distinctive traits that evoke empathy and connection. Their interactions, growth, and challenges drive the plot forward, making them the backbone of any compelling tale.

Create characters with depth by exploring their backgrounds, motivations, and fears. Give them distinct personalities, quirks, and unique voices that set them apart. You should allow your characters to evolve and grow throughout the story. They should face challenges, make choices, and experience changes that contribute to their development.

Engaging Characters

Thought-Provoking Theme

The theme provides the story’s intellectual and main idea, exploring universal truths, morals, or concepts. It adds layers of meaning that resonate with readers on a profound level, sparking introspection and discussions. A well-defined theme anchors the narrative, lending it purpose and significance.

Allow characters to grapple with the theme through their thoughts, decisions, and conflicts. Their personal journeys can mirror the exploration of the theme.

Well-Structured Plot with Conflict

The plot elements serve as the roadmap of the story’s journey, guiding characters through a sequence of events. Conflict is the one that drives the story forward. It can be internal (within a character’s thoughts and emotions) or external conflict (between characters or with the environment). Conflict creates tension, challenges characters, and propels the plot forward.

Here’s how to craft a compelling plot:

  • Introduction: Set the stage by introducing the main characters, the setting, and the initial situation. Engage readers with a hook that sparks curiosity.
  • Rising Action: Introduce central conflict and build tension as challenges arise. Escalate the stakes gradually to maintain intrigue and suspense.
  • Climax: Reach the story’s peak where the conflict reaches its highest point. Characters confront their challenges, and pivotal decisions are made.
  • Falling Action: Show the consequences of the climax and begin to resolve loose ends. Provide closure to subplots and character arcs.
  • Resolution: Wrap up the story, providing a sense of closure while leaving room for readers to reflect and interpret.

Vivid Setting

Transporting your audience to a vivid and immersive setting enhances the storytelling experience. Detailed descriptions of the physical location, time period, and cultural nuances create a backdrop that enhances the story’s atmosphere and realism. A richly depicted setting envelops readers, making them feel like participants in the tale.

Unique Point of View

The choice of narrative perspective influences the reader’s connection to the story. First-person, third-person limited, or even second-person perspectives offer varying levels of intimacy and insight into characters’ thoughts and emotions. The point of view shapes the reader’s perception and understanding of the events unfolding.

Choose a narrative perspective that aligns with your story’s goals and remember consistency throughout the entire story. First-person offers intimacy, third-person limited provides insight, and second-person involves the reader.

Elements Of Storytelling

Key Elements Of Storytelling

As the story unfolds, the storyteller becomes the architect of emotions, constructing peaks of excitement, valleys of reflection, and bridges of connection. With every sentence, listeners are drawn deeper into the narrative’s world, experiencing the highs and lows alongside the characters.

Many storytelling podcasts have these elements in common:

  1. Engaging Voice and Delivery

The heartbeat of any great storytelling podcast is the host’s voice – a vessel that carries the narrative’s emotions and intricacies directly to the listener’s ears.

A fascinating voice doesn’t merely read the words; it injects them with life, drawing listeners into the tale’s embrace. Control your pacing to maintain listener interest. Speed up during action-packed scenes and slow down for reflective or poignant moments. Varying the pace adds depth and keeps the audience engaged.

If you use a first-person point of view, imagine yourself as this character, seeing the world through their eyes, feeling their heartbeats quicken, and sharing their innermost thoughts.

  1. Strong Story Selection

Just as a painter selects their canvas and colors with care, a storytelling podcaster must curate stories that resonate with their audience’s souls.

Stories should be more than words – they should be conduits for empathy, resonating with listeners’ experiences and aspirations. Craft a discerning eye for narratives that touch hearts, captivate minds, and spark conversations.

Understand your target audience’s preferences and interests. Seek tales with themes that mirror your listeners’ hopes, fears, and dreams, and remember that variety is key – mix humor with drama, mystery with inspiration, to cater to diverse tastes. Offer a mix of genres and themes to keep your content fresh and appealing.

  1. Compelling Character Portrayal

Characters breathe life into stories, and as a storyteller, you’re their vocal embodiment.

Give each character a distinct voice, an auditory fingerprint that sets them apart. Use accents, dialects, and speech patterns to make characters easily distinguishable, creating an intimate connection between the listener and the cast.

Understand your characters’ personalities, motivations, and traits. Infuse your portrayal with these characteristics to create believable and relatable individuals.

  1. Effective Use of Sound Effects and Music

As a podcast, usually in audio-only format, there are no visual cues to guide your listeners, and the words may not be enough. That’s why music and sound effects become essential elements in storytelling podcasts.

Soundscapes can elevate storytelling to new dimensions, transforming mere words into immersive experiences. Thoughtful incorporation of sound effects and music can transport listeners to different realms and amplify emotional resonance.

Music and sound effects

Tips: Use editing software to add lively sound to your podcast. For example: add subtle ambient sounds to immerse listeners in the environment and intensify their experience, here are some sound effects to enhance the story’s setting and mood.

Some popular podcast-maker apps I recommend are Descript, Garageband vs Audacity.

  • Ambient Noise: chirping birds, bustling streets, or rustling leaves, to transport your audience to the story’s setting.
  • Footsteps
  • Weather Effects: Raindrops, thunderclaps, or howling winds
  • Crashes and Bangs
  • Crowds or Applause
  1. Masterful Pacing and Timing

Just as a conductor guides an orchestra, you orchestrate the pacing of your narrative. Ramp up the tempo during heart-pounding action, allowing listeners to feel the adrenaline surge. Slow down for poignant moments, giving emotions room to breathe.

Use well-placed pauses to create suspense, anticipation, or emphasis. Allow listeners to absorb information or react to a significant development before moving forward.

  1. Emotional Resonance

The essence of storytelling lies in its ability to evoke emotions that transcend the confines of the spoken word. As a podcaster, your emotions infuse the narrative with authenticity and relatability.

Feel the character’s joys and sorrows, their triumphs and tribulations, and convey these emotions genuinely. When you allow yourself to feel, your listeners feel too – use your voice to evoke emotions in listeners. Express excitement, sadness, anger, and other feelings with sincerity and intensity.

Emotional Resonance
  1. Skillful Use of Silence

In the symphony of sound, silence is a note that holds immense power. A storyteller uses silence to let emotions reverberate and thoughts settle.

Strategic pauses create tension, building a bridge between words that leaves listeners on the edge of their seats. Silence also grants space for reflection, allowing listeners to absorb poignant moments and draw their interpretations.

Tips For Podcasters- The Storytellers

Improvement takes time and dedication. Be patient with yourself and embrace the journey of refining your skills. Over time, your podcast will evolve into a compelling narrative experience that resonates deeply with your audience.

Here are some valuable practices to help you become better:

  • Storytelling Craft Workshops:

Attend workshops or courses focused on storytelling, voice modulation, and audio production. These sessions can provide insights, techniques, and feedback to refine your skills.

  • Listen Critically:

Regularly listen to various storytelling podcasts, both successful and still developing. Pay attention to pacing, character portrayal, sound effects, and how they evoke emotions. Analyze what works and what doesn’t.

  • Practice Regularly:

Like any skill, storytelling improves with practice. Create short stories, monologues, or even reimagined classics to refine your narrative abilities. Record and review your practice sessions for self-assessment.

  • Script Writing:

Craft well-structured scripts or a podcast outline template with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Practice concise and descriptive language that paints vivid mental images for your audience.

Reading Script
  • Self-Care:

Prioritize self-care to maintain a clear and confident voice. Adequate rest, hydration, and vocal warm-ups contribute to a strong and engaging delivery.
